Porcelain veneers are a fantastic way to transform your smile. With proper care, they can look beautiful and last for many years. At Wellesley Hills Dental, I provide my patients comprehensive guidance on maintaining their new smiles.
How to Protect Your Smile Investment
The good news is that caring for porcelain veneers is quite similar to caring for your natural teeth. Consistent oral hygiene is key.
Brush twice daily with a non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Avoid whitening toothpastes, which can be too harsh and may scratch the veneer's surface. Be gentle but thorough when flossing—use a non-waxed floss or a floss specifically designed for cosmetic dental work.
One crucial recommendation is to protect your veneers from potential damage. If you grind your teeth at night, I'll create a custom night guard to prevent unnecessary stress on the veneers. Athletes or those participating in contact sports should also use a protective mouth guard.
While porcelain is stain-resistant, it's wise to minimize consuming deeply pigmented foods and drinks like red wine, coffee, and dark berries. If you do consume these, rinse your mouth or brush soon after. Avoid using your teeth as tools—no opening packages or biting hard objects!
Schedule Your Next Dental Appointment
Regular dental checkups are essential. I recommend professional cleanings every six months, where we'll carefully examine your veneers and ensure they remain in perfect condition. With proper care, your porcelain veneers can maintain their beautiful, natural-looking appearance for 10 to 15 years.
