It takes a dedicated team to deliver quality dental care, and although your dentist provides the treatment you need to maintain a healthy smile, they need many others to operate a successful practice. Dental hygienists are an integral part of any dental team, performing numerous tasks and helping patients feel comfortable and secure.

Let’s explore the role dental hygienists play and how you can celebrate with your kids this October during National Dental Hygiene Month.

What Does a Dental Hygienist Do?

Some of the tasks a dental hygienist is responsible for include the following:

  • Teeth cleanings — They remove the stubborn plaque and tartar buildup from your teeth and gums.
  • Oral health screenings — They check your teeth and gums for signs of tooth decay or gum disease.
  • Preventive care — They apply protective fluoride and dental sealants.
  • Diagnostics — They take x-rays and chart your dental information.
  • Education — They offer tips and advice on brushing and flossing.

What Is National Dental Hygiene Month?

Every October, we celebrate the talented dental hygienists who work diligently to help patients keep their teeth and gums healthy and happy. This annual celebration is a fantastic way to recognize the essential role dental hygienists play in our lives.

For 2026, the theme is The Power of Us, highlighting a different strength each week. Week one focuses on prevention, week two looks at career, week three teaches us about prevention and week four looks at how hygienists care for patients.

Fun Activities for Your Kids

Here are some things you can do with your kids to show them the importance of caring for their teeth and gums:

  • Science — Soak a hard-boiled egg in dark soda or fruit juice. Let it sit overnight, and then have your child brush the egg and remove the stains. This will show them the importance of keeping their teeth clean.
  • Arts and crafts — Have your kids put Play-Doh inside the ridges of a block of LEGOs to represent food particles that get trapped in their teeth. Then, give them dental floss or yarn to see if they can remove the “food.”
  • Brushing games — Set a timer for two minutes and play your child’s favorite songs while they brush their teeth. You can even find songs specific to brushing and flossing.
